TAOS SKI VALLEY…winter is on its’ way!

The Taos Ski Valley is continuing to build and remodel and invest in its infrastructure and amenities (to the tune of $300 million) thereby giving its visitors the best possible experience! This 2018-2019 winter season will be the opening season of its new high-speed quad chairlift. It will transport all who ride it in a matter of approximately 5 minutes from base to top. Already newly renovated are the popular Bavarian and The Phoenix Grill. They now have a new children's center as well as a "gondolita" connecting the base with the beginner area. The fact that TSV is a B Corporation means that though they are a for-profit business they need to be certified by non-profit B labs to meet the standards of social and environmental performance, accountability and transparency. A wonderful undertaking on their part and impressive to live up to. By the way...they expect to open the 2018-2019 season as of November 22nd . So when you are here in Taos busy with your skiing this winter...and loving the experience...remember that we at New Mexico Mountain Properties are here to help you further that experience by showing you the Taos Ski Valley Condos for sale for quick weekend getaways and/or homes for sale in Taos for when you decide to make that move here. Taos Ski Valley

An early snow at Taos Ski Valley is spurring condo and hotel reservations at the world reknown ski mecca. Already many inn keepers and reservationists are reporting near-packed houses for Christmas and the spring break crowd is choosing to ski Taos in large numbers. With the new snow and more snow in the forecast, the Village is taking advantage of the cold weather by making snow at a record pace in anticipation of a very exciting winter season.

For beginners and master skiiers alike, Taos Ski Valley is on par with the best accommodations, restaurants and fun to be found in the Western U.S. Bring the kids, bring the family . . .

And if some in your group would prefer to enjoy the sites of Taos while you ski the famous slopes, there are lots of great winter activities in town. Galleries, shops and restaurants abound, and real estate is fun to explore.

Typically real estate can be sluggish in winter, but this year, with low interest rates and lots of bargains, winter real estate shopping could be a lot of fun.

Taos has a great inventory of homes in the $200K to $400K range and up, that would make wonderful vacation homes. So if you want to ski and someone else in the group would rather be in a nice warm car touring the best home and land listings around, have him or her give us a call. We'll be happy to give a tour of this special area. You never know what you might find . . . because we know you'll want to own a piece of this incredible paradise!

Taos Ski Valley Closes for the season

Sunday April 6th marked the close of a nearly perfect ski season at Taos Ski Valley. Alpine skiers, telemarkers and snowboarders (yes, snowboarders!) turned out in force to celebrate the finale. The pilgrimage to the top of 12,500 ft. Kachina Peak on closing day is a local tradition. The hike takes about an hour and the ski down about 3 minutes but anyone will tell you, it's usually not about the skiing. This year the roughly 200 hikers (nobody's really counting) to reach the summit ranged in age from 8 to 78 and all were rewarded with the magnificent views that extend north into Colorado and south to the Rio Grande Gorge (the second largest rift valley in the world!) and of the surrounding Sangre de Cristo Mountains including 13,161 ft. Wheeler Peak, New Mexico's highest.

However, the skiers and boarders weren't the only ones taking in the view from the summit on Sunday. Three full-curl Rocky Mountain Bighorn rams were lounging on the ridge between Kachina and Lake Fork Peaks soaking up the sun, a testament to the success of the bighorn sheep transplant program begun in these mountains several years ago. Now on any given day hikers may thrill at a sighting of these noble beasts. This day was made extra special because of their presence and everyone witnessing it seemed to know that. After lingering long and basking in the sun and splendor, hunger will begin to over take even the hardiest hiker and knowledge that the Bavarian Restaurant is a mere 3,000 vertical feet away compels one to mount up and point 'em down. The snow is firm, but not too firm to get an edge to hold, and the coverage is excellent. These turns were earned so each one is savored, soaring gracefully toward the valley floor.

The deck of the Bavarian is the obvious next stop. It's crowded with familiar faces and warm with the afternoon sun. What better place to rest and re-fuel? Then on to the annual pond skimming championship where contestants dress in the most bizarre outfits they can muster and attempt to ski or ride across a 150 foot man made "pond" filled with water direct from the Rio Hondo. The most impressive athletes will not only make it all the way across the pond but will throw in a 360 degree turn before touching solid snow on the opposite side. Several participants never make it to the other side and end up getting fished out of the 38 degree water. Fortunately,"Wolfgang Spa Works" is kind enough to set up a hot tub at the finish line for the less than successful, soaked and freezing contestants.

The addition of snowboarders to the mountain has proved to be a welcome one. Even the die hard ski elite seem to be embracing the change. The youthful exuberance and enthusiasm is palpable and certainly the increased revenue is welcome in the community. New life is being breathed into an old establishment and there is more than enough room for everyone!

No doubt we will see another snowstorm in the mountains of Taos before spring really settles in and certainly there will be good back-country skiing well into May, but the "official" 2007/2008 Taos ski season has come to a close. This year's phenomenal snow pack will soon melt into run-off to fill rivers and acequias that nourish the valley below and winter white will give way to the lush green of summer.

Although the mountain is closed for skiing, there is still time to take advantage of the fabulous deals on Taos Ski Valley condos. Our agents can find you a condo to fit your price range. Or, if you prefer a home in Taos or a bit of Taos land to call your own, just give us your requirements and we will be happy to assist you in your search. For the best in Taos real estate, give us a call today. We love to make your dreams for owning real estate in Taos a reality.

Snowboarding comes to Taos Ski Valley!

The 2007 / 2008 ski season has been a truly memorable one at Taos Ski Valley. Ask any longtime Taos local and they will tell you with a sparkle in their eye that they have never seen this much snow covering the mountain... ever! The skiing has been beyond fantastic all winter long. If this is what the climate change means to Taos Ski Valley, bring it on! With three weeks remaining in the ski season, there is no sign of the energy waning.

This weekend marks the official beginning of spring break and the last weeks of the ski season are packed full of activities. March 14-16 is the annual "Ski Turns to Art Show" in the TSV Resort Center. Even the die hard skiers in Taos know that Taos is so much more than a ski town. If you were not an artist when you came to Taos, eventually you will discover the artist within. This unique art show encourages all ski bums and TSV employees to display their hidden talents. You will be amazed at the talent lurking in the residents and visitors of Taos Ski Valley! On Saturday a mountain wide scavenger hunt will benefit the Rocky Mountain Youth Corps. (they're the ones who keep our hiking and biking trails in shape all summer long). Registration is at 9:00a.m. at Rhoda's Restaurant. The "center-ring" event on Sunday is Taos Ski Valley's almost famous Tele Fun Day. Telemark skiers will compete head to head for fun and prizes.

The St. Paddy's Day bash starts right after skiing on Monday (March 17) in the Martini Tree Bar. Local favorites "Vanilla Pop" will play starting at 7:00.

And then... (drum roll please) the day we've all been waiting for, a monumental day in the history of Taos Ski Valley, the day hell freezes over, Wednesday March 19, 2008... SNOWBOARDING COMES TO TAOS SKI VALLEY!!! Grab your boards and bring the kids to witness and participate in this moment in history. Taos Ski Valley, one of three remaining ski areas exclusively for skiers will welcome snow boarders to share the unique Taos experience. Rental equipment and lessons will be available for new comers to the sport. This marks the beginning of an era which is bound to bring new life and interest to this magical mountain playground. Winter will be hard to give up this year in Taos Ski Valley. Fortunately, we still have three weeks to go and we intend to savor every moment!

Looking for a way to Ski and Snowboard today and stay forever! There is a wide selection of Taos Ski Valley condos on the market as well as wonderful homes in Taos to fulfill your dreams.
