Fall Hiking Through The Enchanted Circle

Fall Hiking Through The Enchanted Circle

Now is the best time to see why New Mexico is really called the Land of Enchantment, Fall is a spectacular time to go hiking up here in the mountains where you can see the aspen changing colors and get some good old mountain air which is crisp and cool this time of year.

The first stop would be Angel Fire, New Mexico. There are many trails open year round here that allow you to hike, bike, cross country ski, and snowshoe, trails are maintained by the trekkers and free of hazards. The trailheads are marked with mileage every 1/4 mile. The trailheads are named Bobcat, Solar Loop, Sendero del Sol, Deer Elk Bear, Coyote, Oeste Vista, Lake and Lady Slipper. This time of year is a great time to see all the animals preparing for winter and the streams are in full movement. Angel Fire also has access to the Elliot Barker Trails which is a 23 mile round trip that starts in Angel Fire and goes to Taos. The trailhead pullout is off U.S. 64, 1.5 miles west of its intersection with Angel Fire Highway (N.M. 434)

Taos New Mexico would be the next stop around the Enchanted Circle, You can stop in the canyon between Angel Fire and Taos along the way and enjoy the colorful mountainsides with loads of great hiking trails. You also have places to stop and camp and enjoy the river while you are there. Once in Taos, you will have everything from moderate to extreme trails to choose from. You have the Divisadero Loop which makes a great way to start the morning before getting too warm, Then you have the Williams Lake trail by the Taos Ski Valley which also gives you access to go all the way up to Wheeler Peak, the highest peak in N.M.. It's a little more difficult trail once you get past Williams Lake but well worth the hike. The view is breathtaking. Flechado Canyon Trail starts out at 8,000 feet with a steep climb up crossing streams, rock towers.

Last stop on your journey will put you in Questa and Red River, New Mexico. In Questa you will find a rare river access down into the gorge; in the area of the Rio Grande del Norte National Monument.

Once in Red River you are surrounded by 138 miles of marked hiking trails marked all the way from easy to extreme and short to day trips, like the Wheeler Peak hike. You can access Wheeler Peak from all over the Enchanted Circle.

I guarantee you will not be bored hiking in this glorious area, so come enjoy fall with stunning scenic views and color changing everywhere.
