The Historic Laguna Vista Lodge

The Historic" Laguna Vista Lodge" In Eagle Nest NM,

Located in the little valley town of Eagle Nest NM, originally named "Therma", sits the Laguna Vista Lodge or as locals call it the "Guney". Originally named The El Monte, built in 1898 with stolen railroad ties, some still visible today.

The El Monte was the busiest saloon in the 1920's and 30's when the big money guys, as well as the gold miners from Elizabethtown stopped by after a day at the races in Raton, NM. With the gold miners gambling with gold nuggets at the gaming tables, slot machines, and more, it was the place to be! It was at this time that the name was changed to the Laguna Vista Lodge and was operated by Gene and Pearl Wilson. In the early 1950's is was purchased by Bob and Edith Sullivan. The Sullivan's saw the popularity of Eagle Nest growing so they built the "new" edition to the hotel in 1964. Later on in 1971 Bert Clemens bought it and still runs it to this day.

The more mysterious history of the "Guney" is the permanent guest that resides there, Its said that a bride and groom spent there honeymoon there. The groom went out one day to go hunting but never returned! The destitute bride was forced to work in the hotel, some say as a saloon girl. People say her spirit still lingers there in the old motel looking for her long lost husband! They say she also lurks in the saloon and dining hall.

To learn more about the Lodge, or go ghost hunting come down to our fabulous valley and learn all the rich history that's around. You can also see the Laguna Vista Lodge featured on the Travel Chanel's show Resort Rescue, Dec. 9TH 2014 at 8:00 PM. Don't miss it!

Frieda Lawrence

Frieda Lawrence (1879-1956), wife of the famous author D. H. Lawrence

Another Taos Legend....

Maria Frieda Johanna Baroness von Richards was born in Germany in 1879 to a aristocratic family. In March of 1912 she married the author D.H. Lawrence, leaving her 3 children from a previous marriage behind...."for the love of Lawrence". After many years of the couple traveling around, Lawrence received a letter from Mabel Dodge Luhan in November of 1921 inviting him to Taos.

He did have a dream of writing a novel about every continent so he figured Taos would be a nice place to relax and write. So after a side trip, they arrived in Taos on Sept. 11 1922, D.H.'s 37th birthday. Both loved the beauty of the land. Lawrence later wrote "In the magnificent fierce morning of New Mexico, one sprang awake, a new part of the soul woke up suddenly and the old world gave way to the new."

Now Frieda was not very fond of Mabel and was quite jealous of her which made it hard for D.H. and Mabel to work together. They stayed in one of Mabel's guest houses where D.H. wrote several prose pieces and poems like "The Wilful Woman." But with the tension between the ladies, the Frieda and D.H. moved to an abandoned ranch 20 miles north of Taos.

Mabel did not want D.H. to leave so she offered him the 160-arce Flying Heart Ranch. Lawrence requested that Mabel give the ranch to Frieda and offered her the original autographed manuscript "Sons and Lovers" in exchange. Frieda and Mabel agreed. Frieda later named it Kiowa Ranch.

In 1925 D.H. fell ill. The doctor advised him to stay at the ranch so he could get the fresh mountain air and sunbaths. Four years later he died on March 2, 1930 of T.B. in Vence, France.

Lawrence's ashes were brought back to Taos where Frieda built a shrine for him on the property. She mixed his ashes in the cement so that Mabel would be unable to steal them!

On a visit in 1939 Tennessee Williams signed her guest book along with many other famous people. Later on she bought a place in El Prado 3 miles north of Taos where she would spend her winters. She died of her birthday Aug. 11, 1956.

A year prior to her death, Frieda gifted the ranch to the University of New Mexico which called it The D.H. Lawrence Ranch to use it for educational and research purposes.

You can visit the Ranch here in Taos and see for yourself why Frieda and D.H. Lawrence loved Taos so much.

Elizabethtown

Elizabethtown or "E-Town"

Just below Baldy Mountain sits the remains of a once bustling boom camp called Elizabethtown, that once housed over 7,000 residents. its located just north of Angel Fire N.M

It all began in 1866, when a Ute Indian arrived at Fort Carson where Captain William H. Moore was. the captain. He had helped the Indian with his injuries and in return, he gave the captain a special rock he found atop a mountain. The captain realized it was rich in copper. The Indian agreed to take him to the place where he found it. Which jut happened to be the edge of the Maxwell Land Grant atop of Mt. Baldy.

When they reached the spot the captain realized this was an area with a great deal of copper. They decided to stake the first of many claims, with not just copper, but gold as well found along the banks of Willow Creek.

The find was too big too keep secret. Word got around very quickly, even to the sole owner of the Maxwell Land Grant, Mr. Lucien B. Maxwell, who owned the Moreno Valley as well as Baldy Peak. By July 1867, 17 companies and 400 claims in an 8 mile radius of Baldy were set up. This is how Elizabethtown got started, named after the captain's daughter Elizabeth Catherine Moore.

By the end of July 1868 around 400 people occupied Elizabethtown and like most old west towns Saloons, drinking, dining, red-lighting, and gambling were in full swing. In 1869 the town had 100 buildings, and with the families of the miners moving there they built a school as well as a church. The first newspaper came out in 1869 called the Elizabethtown Lantern.

During the harsh winter months as they often are in the valley, the population diminished until the dawn of spring brought everyone back. The "Big Ditch" was built to divert water from the Red River to try and gain more water for gold panning but was not very successful. In 1900 a lawsuit banned the diversion of water.

Tragedy struck E-Town in Sept. 1901, when a fire broke out in one of the establishments. Within an hour and fifteen minutes most of the buildings were reduced to ashes. The only store that still stands is that of Herman Froelick. By 1917 most everyone was gone and E-Town became a ghost town.

This is just part of the rich history of our area. To learn more stay tuned or better yet, come for a visit and allow us to show you around this historic region... you may want to stay forever!!

The Taos Hum

The Mountain Song of Taos or... "The Taos Hum"

The Taos hum is a low frequency humming sound which echos down from the Sangre de Christo mountains.

Looming out of the Taos mountain range is a peak called El Salto. This majestic peak has seven waterfalls that cascade down it's sides in summer and displays wonderful ice sculptures in the winter time. There are caves hidden behind some of the falls, which may have to do with the ample sound of the hum echoing down the valley. For generations, the people of the area considered this to be a holy mountain. In the mid 1800's the famous Giovanni Maria Agostini Justiniani, climbed El Salto and later wrote he heard the singing waters.

Climbers today say they can hear the endless musical tone which changes the higher you climb. Some people like the hum. They find it peaceful and calming, but others say it is maddening and drives them insane! In 1993 people banned together and petitioned congress to investigate the hum. The prestigious institutes of the University of New Mexico, Sandia National Laboratories, Phillips Air Force Base, and the Los Alamos National Laboratory did exstinsive research. Despite all of the technology, the could not find out what was causing the hum.

For those who want to hear the hum, it is suggested to go outside of Taos in the deserts or forests around early mornings or at night time, for those are the best times to hear the hum. So come to Taos New Mexico and see if you can hear, "The Taos Hum".

For those wanting to climb El Salto and see the falls, it's located 7 miles north of Taos on private land. They can be visited with a permit.
